I grew up just a few miles north of EC. When we 'went to town' as teenagers, we meant we were going to Elizabeth City. After the police-involved shooting of an 'unarmed' black man last week, the city has gone to shit. Protesters are blocking roads and creating mayhem. The New Black Panther Party is in the city to bring their own special brand of trouble to the situation. Race-baiter Al Sharpton will be delivering the eulogy at Brown's funeral - and you know how that will fuel the fire.
After analyzing photos of the scene once the story broke, it wasn't difficult for me to ascertain that Brown was attempting to drive through a police line to escape arrest. Essentially, he was using his car as a weapon and attacking police with it. Today, the EC DA confirmed that analysis.
Of course, the first story is usually the one that sticks, so the family's declaration that Brown was executed by deputies is the 'true' narrative, facts be damned. Sharpton will say it was an act of racism. People will lose their shit when the deputies involved are exonerated.
I can't get home to my parents (not without a long detour, anyway) without going through the city. Protesters are blocking the bridge out of town on mom and dad's side. These situations always suck, especially so when I'm cut off from direct access to my elderly parents.
