Cops are starting to get out of hand. THis isn't even race related (No offense to Rob)

Speaking of which Rob how should this be handled? If the 911 operator is talking to the cops and the lady on the phone, shouldn't she tell the cops what is going on and theyy follow her to the hospital?

This is the second time that I have seen this, and personally it sickens me. They can see she is having the baby. Then all of the shit they are doing while wait on the medics they should be put under the jail.

To say the least, they handled the situation incorrectly. However, the father/driver also is not without some fault. He should have pulled over immediately when he got flashed by the cops, not ignoring them and continuing to drive.

The cops were wrong in that there was no need to put the guy on the ground and threaten him or his wife once they realized his wife was having a medical emergency. They should have, at that point, called for an ambulance, and after realizing the ambulance would be delayed, probably should have driven the woman to the hospital themselves and allowed the father to proceed to the hospital in a safe manner and meet them there.

He should not have been arrested and I doubt the vast majority of cops would have handled the situation the way these two idiots did.

Thanks,

I appreciate your LE point of view as always.

I noticed the fact that there was no reason to pull them over anyways as they were within the speed limit. Comment by one of the cops about the car going to the Hood was very revealing.

"When one of the officers asked why the couple had been pulled over, another replied, “I wanted to get stupid,” the Reiners said.

In a video from Thomas’ car, an officer can be heard talking about a “blue Caddy,” which the Reiners suspected was a reference to their green 1994 Lincoln Town Car.

“Blue Caddy, two times,” the officer says. “I’m like, yeah, this is going to the ’hood.” "

Idiots like those two are why so many have a very low opinion of police officers.

Rob, I thought that just seeing lights on a car behind you does not mean that it is an actual police car. I thought that it was recommended to drive to either a well-lit area or the nearest police station. Obviously the couple could not do the latter, but perhaps they should have continued to the hospital?

You could and probably should do that if it is an unmarked vehicle. According to the story, this was a marked police cruiser. The best course of action for the father would have been to pull over as soon as it was possible to do in a safe manner, not continue driving.

These cops made numerous mistakes in this incident, that much is certain. It looks like the stop probably shouldn't have been made in this instance. But each case is unique. I would always recommend that in this type of situation, it's best to pull over and seek assistance from the officers if for no other reason than to prevent the birth from occurring in a moving vehicle with no one to assist the Mom.

Thankfully, the woman eventually got to the hospital and the baby was born healthy. That's the bottom line.

Yeah, that could have went really wrong REALLY fast.

The way that cop was acting, when the wife got out of the car, he could have shot her.

Quetion though Rob, could there have been any way that the 911 operator could have told the cops what was going on?
She was in contact with them the whole time.

About the 911 operator...

That person is not actually on scene and can only go by what they are told over the phone. They really have no clue as to whether or not what they are being told is truthful, nor do the officers know that what the dispatcher is conveying to them is actually true, or that the party in question is actually the vehicle they are in pursuit of. Those facts can only be confirmed after the event is over.

What the 911 operator should have done is tell the caller to remain calm and to pull over as soon as it was safe to do so. It should have been up to the officers to decide what course of action to take after the stop, be it waiting for an ambulance, escorting them to the hospital, or driving her themselves...but I don't beleive what they did (putting the guy on the ground at gunpoint, etc.) was the best of choices given the circumstances...

Given the circumstances of this incident, I would have probably requested an ambulance and upon learning there would be a delayed response time, I would have taken her to the hospital with either myself or my partner riding in the back of the police car with the women in the event her condition changed enroute to the hospital, and having the father driving his own vehicle to the hospital and meeting us there.
