Should America Restore The Draft?

I'm not sure about restoring the draft, but I do think everyone coming out of high school ought to devote 2 years to doing something other than going to school. Very few kids out of high school have any real idea of what they want to do. They need to take a couple of years to figure it out. And doing something for your country can never be a bad idea, so maybe military or public service (something like the CCC) ought to be mandatory.

I'll agree with this. Kids popping out of school need a little time to actually view the real world as it is, rather than how their teachers have depicted it. 2 years is about right, and they should be offered a few options to serve. You have to admit that respect, allegiance and a sense of loyalty to America are extremely lacking in today's young. This may be the way to give these youngsters something to be proud of.

Dear bbfreeburn:

Are you saying that there aren't ANY students who may opt to support/join ISIS? I'm not saying that there are a lot of them, but that's a small part of the equation (from a rational perspective).
 
But doesn't one of the countries in the middle east make everyone serve in some way shape or form when they turn 18?
Quite sure I read that somewhere. In israel maybe. Need to find what I was reading before.
 
Not sure about middle east, but I think at least one of the Norwegian countries does. And they get to keep their government provided sidearm when they get out if I recall correctly.
 
Just did a search, quite a few countries require some military service of varying length. The longest requirements appear to be from countries in middle east/africa/asia.
 
I thought I read that Switzerland was one that required it and allowed you to keep the weapon in case of an emergency?
 
I know Israel is one of them that its manditory for a few years for both men and women.

I would never have passed the physical qualifications. However, as an engineer, I could have done that for the government/military.
