The prevailing counter argument is that parade, of licensed by the city or state is free speech on public area and that Colleges aren't.
It's an interesting free speech question when it comes to colleges vs the public square.
Most conservatives and classical liberals (Eric Weinstein) believe that these institutions have become morally bankrupt since they aren't treating these statements as harassment or bullying.
My own thoughts on this is that students have every right to say what they want outside of campus, but the campus itself ( nor resources ) should not tolerate such speach since students live on campus and colleges are effectively a state run business. All harassment policies should be treated equally.
Businesses fire people over speech, so why can't colleges expell students? Freedom of speech isn't free of consequences, at least that's what the left has been saying for years.
