Does anyone really feel that federal data is accurate when indicating that grocery prices have increased by only 21.1% since President Biden took office in 2021? And do you believe White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre's claims that grocery prices "have come down recently"?
n a recent press briefing, Jean-Pierre said, "To be clear, we've seen grocery prices come down over the past year or more, and a lot of that has been the work that's been done by this administration."
However, Labor Department data indicates that grocery prices haven't come down, even though they are increasing less dramatically. But the facts are that grocery costs haven't decreased since inflation peaked at 9.1% in 2022, and they keep going up, though at a lesser rate.
Egg prices are up more than 40% under Biden, and such items as butter, flour and sugar have increased nearly as much, and with few exceptions -- such as slightly lower cost of apples, cheese and cereal -- virtually all grocery shoppers are feeling a big-time pinch.
But back to the data indicating a 21.1% grocery-price increase under Biden, can you really believe the accuracy of such a figure? And think about it. Haven't most of the things you purchase at the grocery store increased more than 21.1% since January 2021? And doesn't it seem that more items have gone upwards by more than 30% as compared to things that have increased less than 10%?
No matter how you analyze it, even today's larger paychecks buy less, and consumers are being squeezed by higher prices everywhere they look. The drop in purchasing power has forced many Americans to rely on credit cards in an attempt to make ends meet, and outstanding balances have increased to more than $1 trillion while credit-card interest is at record highs.
Certain major expenses, such as home purchases or renovation, can be put off in trying times, but food is a necessity, and there's no way to avoid those soaring prices.
