Long article by Coleman Hughes, a writer and an academic. This is a discussion on the Chauvin trial almost 4 years later. His article is a rebuttal to a Wapo columnist about an earlier article in which Coleman Hughes believes there was significant reasonable doubt in the case.

Some of the hate the author is getting.

The obvious thing for me was: the more severe rout for Chauvin would have been taser which would have likely killed Floyd anyways, but would have been seen as justified

I do think his defense was subpar and it looks like from the review from other lawyers that his appeals was also subpar.


The fundamental problem I see is the precedent of this case: any interaction with a cop and a suspect dies is instantly the cops fault. Meaning: a jury in this case ignored all evidence that a myriad of reasons outside of the cops control are still his fault. Even when resisting arrest. Even with a mob threatening the cop. Even when following procedure.

Dj that entire fiasco still baffles me. Chauvin's body language and facial expression during the event with Floyd was creepy as heck. No sense of emotion or empathy. It was like he wanted Floyd to die. When the ambulance arrived; Chauvin acted like he was loading a slaughtered bull at a butcher shop. The entire thing was strange. I'm not doubting Floyd was under the influence of drugs and would have probably died regardless. Yet, those cops were acting suspicious. There has to be more to the story because something ain't quite right.

One thing that was only shown during the trial was that even before Floyd was in any medical danger was they were dealing with hecklers.

Just because a cop/cops looks a certain way anyhow they carry their business should be no reason to determine manslaughter or murder. The defense had shown that Chauvin was trained in this type of use of force.
The cops could have just tazed him which would have been approved and an acceptable use of force. Medical experts agreed that taser would have likely killed Floyd instantly


Also the ambulance was significantly late because of traffic and because of the hecklers/bystanders.

Just think, the ambulance was even 2 minutes earlier Floyd might not be dead.

I am not trained in policing, but as a former healthcare professional- I am trained in patient health observation. One thing required was to quietly observe and take notes. Those notes were to be documented in detail and recorded in the patient's database awaiting physician's review. I noticed troubling issues with Floyd AND Chauvin. Not the other cops so much (besides fear), yet, Chauvin was different.

I would have tazed the heck out of Chauvin if I was one of the other cops. Then cuffed him. Just think, that may have saved Floyd's life as well.

Chauvin deserves everything he got.

Floyd was gonna die one way or another regardless of what Chauvin did. He had enough shit in his veins to kill three good sized people. Plus, all he had to do was get into the car.
