View Full Version : What's your first ball out the bag?

Mine is definitely The Thing. I have two of them... one to go long and one to roll up early. The go-long ball is first out the bag. Great ball, reads the lanes well. I know almost immediately which ball I need to use after a few shots. Feels good to have a ball that you feel comfortable with that gives you a good read.

Which ball is first out the bag, and why?

First ball out is a Buzzsaw, usually the Cherry Bomb. Drilled for skid/snap or late hard arc (depending on oil pattern). This is the hardest hitter of all my Buzzsaws; if I can use it at all it gives me the best chance of scoring. This ball also allows me to play more areas of the lane than some of my other stuff (a fair amount of my stuff is designed more for down and in type shots, since that's really where I'm most comfortable.)

Mine is the THING as well... What a great ball, even for a hack like me! It usually stays out too... :)

Tony I'm really thinking about picking up a Vendetta Particle before the start of next season... Phil posted some good info on that ball at br.com, I need an oil ball so I might give it a shot.

Lately, I have been throwing the FantasyX from AZO. The ball feels comfortable and gives me a real easy to read reaction. Never gives me big under/over. I know some guys on here can't throw it due to PBA restrictions but I like it.

Oddly enough, any time I am in Lafayette its the old faithul Ti Messenger, outside lafayette its a Deuce. Dont ask me why but the deuce is too much out of the bag in Laf. and the ti is not enough anywhere else.

I usually start with my Nighthawk M2. Stand left and throw it slow looping the lane, partly to warm up and partly to see where the dry is. I've had the ball a long time and know what to expect out of it. Within a few shots I should know what to throw and where.

Larry still has all of his original equipment. He is throwing a black angle that he bought in 1956. :drunk: :drunk: :drunk: :drunk: :drunk: When he was 20 years old :drunk: :drunk: :drunk:

I start out with my left ball first :D

I'll toss a TPC Warrior and read off of it, if I need more, I'll chage to a Vicious Particle. If I need less, I'll go to my VII pearl or Stinger LF.

Larry, I think I still have a Earl Anthony Ebonite Gyro from 1974 that may work for your fluff shot

One of two different drilled Icon 300's.

Hey Gary,

I think you better go back to your ORIGINAL Icon's, they seem to be the one's that were giving you most of your 300's. :wink2:

BTW, How did the NEW Piranha I used last night look, while subbing for you guys.

I think Columbia made that ball just for me. :naughty:

I shot a 300 last Saturday night with one of my Icon 300's.

I see a lot of Icons these days. I am also seeing a lot of Storm. These X-Factors are pretty popular here in Houston. Most of these are sold through Mike Austin, my pro shop guy.

I find it interesting how loyal people are with equipment. They get a good ball, let's say a Storm Fire Power or something. Then they just wait for the next Storm ball to come out. They figure that every ball from Storm will be a winner. But every ball from a company isn't a match for one type of bowler. It almost hurts you to limit yourself to one ball company. Bowlers on staff rarely have every ball the company makes in their arsenal. But they WILL have a couple of the same ball drilles differently. When a ball works for them, they stay with it.

That is the way I am with The Thing and Vendetta Particle. I have three Vendetta Particles and two Things. These really are great balls for my game. However, the red Vendetta was unpredictable with me. Very conditional for my game. But more people like the red Vendetta than the particle one. Go figure.

Food for thought for those that are considering a new ball purchase.

Tony, you're probably right, BUT, I pretty much throw nothing but Buzzsaws. I've tried (I think) every ball they've ever put out and only found 2 that didn't match up very well with my so called game. I think they put out a great line and for what I bowl now (leagues and local tournaments) they serve me very well. Having said that, I must add that I'm just beginning to throw some Roto Grip stuff and so far am very impressed. So, even if you do tend to be a one line bowler, it can't hurt to look at some other stuff now and again. You might be pleasantly surprised.

It doesn't matter....they're all about the same over the last 5 years or so. So maybe they hook a little more now but that's about it. They sure don't feel like they hit the pins any harder. Granted, some do roll more consistantly than others. So I'd say everyone is throwing the ball they have the most confidence in right off the bat. Don't be afraid of the ball a guy/girl is throwing, be afraid of them if you feel the need to panic.

The FREAK OUT!!! It's usually followed by the ERASER BOOST if I need to change my break point, or the TOO HOT, if they are hookin to much.

Lately, it's my Storm PDW. The next is the Hammer Vicious Pearl. Since the start of summer these are about the only ones I need besides the Storm Football for those pesky left side spares.

First ball out of my bag is Trauma response. However last monday I bought a Ebonite V2 and really like it, so the response has been replaced.
