I've read studies that link sodas and sweets with bad grades. Personally, I think it's about time the schools stop serving crap for food. If it's a learning institution, it should not serve foods that hinder learning. Schwarzenegger has problems with obesity, and high calorie sugar drinks are just the first step.

Hopefully other schools will follow.

California bans soda in public high schools
Schwarzenegger signs legislation prohibiting carbonated beverages

Updated: 3:42 p.m. ET Sept. 15, 2005
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation Thursday to ban carbonated soda in state high schools as part of an effort to stem teen obesity.

“California is facing an obesity epidemic,” said Schwarzenegger, a former Mr. Olympia and long-time health advocate. “Today we are taking some first steps in creating a healthy future for California.”

He signed the legislation at the start of a daylong summit on health and obesity in the California capital Sacramento. He said that one out of three children in California, the nation’s most populous state, is obese.

Obesity-related health problems cost us $28 billion a year,” Schwarzenegger said. “We are going to terminate obesity in California once and for all.”

The new law allows milk, drinks with at least 50 percent fruit or vegetable juice and drinking water without sweetener. It would be phased in from 2007 and take full effect in 2009.

The ban, already in existence in California’s elementary schools, will cost school districts hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost income.

At present, soda is sold through vending machines and cafeterias in most California public high schools.

Another bill signed by Schwarzenegger on Thursday would boost spending on fruits and vegetables in school meals.

I wonder if that applies to kids who bring their lunch, or just the vending machines.

Yeah, hopefully it's a ban on SELLING these products. I don't like the idea of being told I can't drink them in school... but instead being told I can't buy it there.

The vending machines here don't serve sodas anymore, just the fruit type drinks.

Hell, a majority of the fruit drinks have as much sugar as soda.

I don't like it.:arg: I think the government is imposing too much shit on our "rights" to make a choice. If you don't want you 3rd grader to have a soft drink, don't give them any money to get one.:duh: or are you going to tell me that chicks that want a Coke will offer to blow some kid for a 1.00 to buy one:suckngiz:

Hose, you think a 3rd grader can't get a dollar from somewhere? Children don't have the same "rights" as adults. I think this is a great idea.

LAUSD started removing all soda vending machines from schools a few years ago. The biggest complaint was the loss of revenue.

As an elementary school teacher, I have never allowed sodas during school time. The exception is class parties, and those are held at the end of the day. Then they can go home with the caffine and sugar high :naughty: :D

We never had a Soda Machine in any of my elementary schools, middle schools or high schools or any of the schools I walked into in San Antonio.

We had those crappy syrup machines that can never mix worth a damn...made it that much easier just to bring in the OJ in a bottle from the house (ok, so it was not exactly pure OJ, but we were the most successful program in the school so nobody questioned us).

I'm glad I'm not the only one that had a screwdriver before a difficult test.

What about the vending machines with donuts, cookies, chips, and the like??
Teen-age smoking is a bigger concern. Leave the coke machines or take them
all out. Teach kids about exercise for obesity.

I saw a story on TV how this has created a new type of "dealer" at schools. This chick had a backpack full of candy and was pulling in something like $50/day.
